I sit on a wooden bench on Wesbrook Mall, at the south-west entrance to Hampton Place. It is 12:30 and there is quite a lot of activity going on around me. The road itself is quite busy and the sounds of the cars and busses passing came in waves with periods of near silence in between. I first notice an older guy dressed in red sweatpants and wearing a hat and gloves. He looks tired, like he has been running and is now warming down as he gets closer to home. Then comes a younger guy wearing a baseball cap; he is carrying a big bag of groceries from Save-On-Foods in his left hand and two litres of milk in the other. Across the street on the running track, there are six girls running quickly around the track. I hear someone blowing a whistle over on the track, but I can’t see them. A lady comes by pushing a pram (stroller) with a little girl in it; the girl is crying, and her brother is trying to help to push the pram. Two guys pass heading south; one has a brown dog on a leash with him, the other is walking and looking at his phone while talking to the other guy. A girl passes on her bike on the sidewalk; she has a backpack crammed with groceries on her back. It’s suddenly very quiet; no traffic, no whistles – silence. A car comes out of Hampton Park and makes a kind of regular clicking noise as the tyres cross the meeting point of the sections of road. There are two guys walking around the track the opposite direction to the other people; they both have their hands on their hips, tired from running. An older lady passes close to me; white walking shoes, scarf, gloves. It brings my senses in closer to me and I smell the dampness of the bench and grass around me. Two people pass, holding hands; both in sweatpants, both with shaved heads. An older couple crosses the street; the cars slow to let them pass. A tall young guy passes wearing a teal (turquoise?) coat; he has a young husky on a leash with him. It’s suddenly really loud; lots of cars – the #25 stops across the street and moves off again. A lady goes into Hampton Park; she has a canvas bag full of groceries on her right shoulder and two Save-On-Foods bags in her left hand; it seems like she’s carrying more than she’s comfortable with. A guy walks south really quickly; he’s wearing a green surgical mask over his mouth. An airplane passes overhead unseen. I hear geese, and then nine of them fly overhead; 8 in V-formation and one kind of off to the side by itself.
