The whole truth, and nothing but the truth

How do you know what is true (in education or elsewhere)?
  • We often rely on generally accepted scientific knowledge [e.g. water boils at 100ºC; I’ve never measured this myself, but I accept that this is true]
  • We also rely on our own experience, but we bear in mind that our experience is subjective [e.g. police reports on an incident will likely have different accounts depending on people’s perspective; physical, cultural, and more…]
  • We often rely on “experts”, especially those who agree with what we already believed to be true

What would convince you that something is true?

  • An experiment, repeated with the same results each time; scientific method
  • The word of an expert or someone I trust

What counts as evidence?

  • Data
  • An account from an expert or someone I trust
